What Do Graphic Designers Actually Do?

What does a graphic designer actually do she's/ he considering becoming a graphic designer and this is a question that is really weird to talk about Believe It or Not for me.
It's a little odd that people still don't know what graphic designers do in this day and age considering how much more on graphic design has become a part of general media and has even be been portrayed in films.

But I'm going to attempt to answer this question because I know it's one that a lot of people actually still have so just bear with me.

What do graphic designers actually do well it depends there are actually only four types of graphic designers without getting into graphic design disciplines like logo design print design etc.

There are really only four types of graphic designers the four types of graphic designers are

(1) In-house graphic designers
(2) Freelance graphic designers
(3) Agency graphic designers and
(4) Studio graphic designers.

Now a lot of you might think that studio and agency graphic designers are the same thing but they're not.

Let's start with in-house graphic designers. in-house graphic designers need to be generalist in-house graphic designers frankly do everything and I mean everything.

If you're working as an in-house graphic designer it means that you're working for a company that may not specialize in advertising or print work or what-have-you they could be a company in any industry it doesn't matter what it means is that for that company.

You'll be designing logos for products you'll be doing print ads when they need to do any type of advertising or marketing when they need to do online marketing you'll be doing the graphical banners you may even have to actually do the web design.

Whether that's doing hand coding or using something else like Adobe muse it also means that you'll probably be doing some of their internal materials as well which means we'll be doing business cards on letterheads and this is assuming that they actually know that this is the standard and they should a graphic designer doing this instead of just some regular person with no design background but anyway.

If you're an in-house graphic designer pretty much you're going to be doing everything you're going to be doing print web mobile you're going to be doing banners billboards just whatever they need that has to do with visual presentation design and aesthetic this is pretty much true.

If you're going to be a freelance designer as well unless you decide to go the specialist route as a freelance designer

You probably will get more jobs and more money the more disciplines that you do and do well because you'll have a diversity of clients on the other hand if you're a freelance graphic designer.

You can specialize and you can decide to only do logo design and brand identity or specifically web design or that you only do print or mobile design working with web developers and web development companies.

You could be a UI designer you can do all these things again if you are going to be an in-house designer there are specific industries where you might get to be a specialist but usually.

if you're working for a company and it's not something like a technology company like Apple or what have you they want you as a specialist they'll want you to do everything and they want you to do it for one paycheck if you work for a company.

That's either a technology company or something like that then maybe you can work as a specialist if you're a freelancer you can choose to be a specialist or a generalist.

If you are going to work at an agency you're more than likely going to have to be a generalist also you're going to have to be able to do everything and do it well just because of the changing demands of clients even be consistent across campaigns and products and again to keep overhead and cost low and keep teams small and manageable.

So if you want work for an ad agency you need to be a graphic designer that can handle print web do different things like logo identity it'd help if you have some illustration background skill and of course you're going to need to at least be able to do basic web design.

If you're going to be a studio graphic designer this is another opportunity to be a specialist studio graphic designers are different than agency

Graphic designers they're small teams where they have people who specialize specifically work as a team to do larger overall projects.

So if that's your end goal then I recommend doing that if you want to be a specialist it won't be a specialist either be a freelancer or go work for a smaller studio now.

If you're still confused as to what graphic designers do here are just some examples of what graphic designers do graphic designers are responsible for visual presentation they're responsible for how things look and that has mostly to do with either packaging design advertising web design and just general marketing so examples of what you'll be doing as a graphic designer means that you might be doing poster designs for a movie.

It also could mean that you're doing flyers for an event you could also end up laying out the pages for a magazine publication or the cover of that magazine you might actually arrange or create the advertisements for a newspaper if you're working at a publication house there's just a lot to it you can literally do anything as a graphic designer because you're in the business of making things at least visually.

anyway this is a problem that most graphic designers have they don't know what to do because there's so much that can be done and this is why to narrow that scope a lot becomes specialists they either work on logo designs.

Where you're doing on either word marks or you're doing emblems and those things represent products
companies or brands they either specifically do print design where you might do logos you may not but a lot of times.

You'll be doing layout and arrangement you may or may not do Photoshop artwork as a print designer you might actually be a print production person who's doing the resizing and things like that you may be an illustrator or a digital illustrator that is working as a graphic designer.

There's any number of things that you can do as a graphic designer there are multiple disciplines and that people have a question as to what graphic designers actually do because it could be a lot of things it could be a combination of things or it could be one or two things it really just depends on what you want your career to be about as a graphic designer.

if you want to be constantly challenged and have different types of projects to work on and work on everything from posters to billboards the album covers you might want to be a agency graphic designer and you just have to decide what type of industry you want to work in this might also be an opportunity for you work as a studio designer.

So those are some options if you want variety you could also do that as a freelancer and you will have some variety as a in-house designer working for a company but it will be within the scope of what the company actually needs anyway I actually answer a lot more specific questions about the nature of graphic design.

Graphic designers are responsible for visual communication and presentation this could mean developing everything from the logos and brand identity materials of a company or a product or doing outright advertising for a product or service or communicating an idea through infographics on public service announcements in print and web etc.

So graphic designers can do a lot of different things and they can be used in a lot of interesting ways by the right company brand or organization well I hope this answers everybody's questions about what graphic designers actually do like
